Planning Commission Welcomes New Technical Services Specialist

We are pleased to announce that Benjamin Nein has joined our staff as the new Technical Services Specialist. Benny recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Chester University with a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Environmental Planning, and is on track to complete his Master of Science in Geography later this year. While an undergraduate, Benny was a data analyst intern at the Chester County Department of Parks and Open Space Preservation. He also worked as a graduate assistant providing data research and visuals for faculty and university events. We look forward to having Benny assist with GIS while also providing support with IT related tasks.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Growing up, I wanted to be a pilot. Once when I was really young my family took a vacation to Mexico and the pilot of our flight let me sit in his seat in the cockpit when we had landed.

What was your first job? My first job was at a pet supply store. I started working there sophomore year of high school. I didn’t have a position title. The store was a small family run business so we all shared roles.

What did you study in college? I attended West Chester University and pursued a degree in Urban and Regional Planning. Currently, I am enrolled in an accelerated Master’s program in Geography.

How did you arrive at the Chester County Planning Commission? The people in my major at school were very close with each other. We kept in good contact with alumni and I heard of this opening through one of my colleagues. I am very grateful for this opportunity because it provides me a chance to work for my community and continue my education with planning.

What three words best describe you? I would say the three words that best describe me are kind, adaptable, and enthusiastic. Being kind comes easiest to me because my parents always made sure I understood that you never know what people are going through.  I understand what it’s like to be judged and I don’t want people I interact with to ever feel that way around me.

What is something colleagues don’t know about you? I crash landed in a hot air balloon. The actual balloon was intact, but we needed to land somewhere that wasn’t a designated spot and we needed to land fast and I was dragged in the basket across a whole farm field.

What is your life philosophy? My life philosophy is always changing but currently I say plan what is only necessary and live in the moment the rest of the time.

What is your favorite place in Chester County? My favorite place in Chester County is Stroud’s Preserve. I discovered that spot freshman year of college and have gone frequently since then. It really has helped me on days that I needed to clear my head. I also enjoy exercising and taking people there.

Where would we find you after hours? This is a tricky question because I have no idea where I’m going to end up on a daily basis. If everything is going well, it’s class or my bedroom.

What’s the last book you read? The last book I read was The Shining. I’m in a horror novel moment right now and I figured I should start with a classic.
